Surf's Down

A (blind) birds-eye view of nature's symmetric randomness

The Project

Using the X-Pan crop in the camera (see bottom of the page for more info about this technique), this series explores a “birds-eye” view of the surf meeting land in The Algarve in Southern Portugal – specifically at the Algar de Benagil.  To simply view the photographs, keep scrolling. Surf’s Down – The Story

While in the Algarve, I was taking pictures at the Algar de Benagil – an Instagram-famous sea cave with a hole in the top. After leaning over to take nearly blind shots down through the cave’s roof (see photo at right of a photographer – not me – shooting  down into the Algar de Benagil), I soon discovered the entrancing patterns and symmetry created by the surf, the sand, and the rocks.  And playing on the familiar phrase, “Surf’s Up,” I created the series “Surf’s Down” to highlight the unique views of nature’s “random symmetry” from above.
